Designing the Perfect Bedroom on a Shoe String Budget
We all dream to have the perfect designer bedroom that complements our personality, whilst fitting the character of our home without costing the earth. Some of the best looking bedrooms are the ones that focus on simplicity and style.
Bedrooms do not need to be overcrowded and only really need the raw essentials in them to be both functional and stylish.
Flooring
There are two main choices here; laminate and carpet. The modern bedroom can utilise either although I personally prefer laminate, not only do I find it to be a lot more durable and long-lasting but it is also a lot easier to clean.
Specific woods can be used such as oak and hardwood which can provide an easy blend between other items within the room such as; the bed, wardrobes and draws.
The Bed
The size of your bed depends entirely on how much space you have in your bedroom, although the bed is the main thing you do need to consider when designing your room.
Consider the placement of your bed in relation to other items within your room, for example you want your bed to directly face the television, however the television needs to be placed within appropriate access of plug sockets and the aerial.
Typically the bed is the centre piece of a bedroom with all other furniture positioned appropriately around it. Beds can come in a range of sizes including;
- Single
- Three Quarters
- Double
- King Size
- Super King Size
The Wardrobe
The size of your wardrobe depends entirely on whether you are sharing your room with a partner and the size of your bedroom. For those who are limited on space within their bedroom the consideration of sliding wardrobe doors may be useful.
I am a firm believer in the space saving solutions offered by sliding wardrobes, along with looking extremely modern and stylish they are also extremely practical. Match your frame and panel styles with the other items in your bedroom to keep your theme consistent.
There are two myths attached to sliding wardrobe doors that are untrue, the first being they are expensive which is complete nonsense, I recently did a quick shop round online and saw prices starting at £150.00, most suppliers will price match as well.
The second myth is that they are difficult to install, again this is untrue, as most sliding door wardrobes come complete with step-by-step instructions and can be erected by any do-it-yourself enthusiast.
Draws and Cabinets
Bedside tables and chest of drawers are important pieces of furniture to have in your room. Providing useful storage and practicality these items can be picked up for very little expense, either second hand or new and blend in seeminglessly with the rest of the furniture in your room.
Ideally you would like these pieces of furniture to be constructed of the same material as your laminate flooring and bed, whether that be; oak, timber, hardwood etc.
Entertainment
It’s always nice to un-wind after a stressful day by watching television in bed. Saving space is encouraged through an all-in-one entertainment solution, for example, most flat screen televisions nowadays come with in-built DVD players.
The advantage to having a flat screen system is that it is easily integratable with storage and mounting solutions, for example, wall brackets can be used to hang the television from and we are also now seeing the emergence of television integration at the foot of a bed where it rises and reclines in the bed’s wooden panels.
On the whole it is not overly difficult to design a bedroom, sticking to fundamental principles of simplicity and space awareness will stand you in good stead. There are a number of space saving solutions available on today’s market to help you make the most of the room you have available.
