What Type of Loft Ladder Is Best?

A loft is a very useful space where you can store things that you only need occasionally (like Christmas decorations). But to make use of your loft, you have to get up there first!

You can achieve this with a fitted, extendable ladder. A loft ladder is a great investment because, when you’re done, you can just fold it back up and store it out of the way. It really is as simple as that!

Types of loft ladders

All of these can be made from either metal (usually aluminium) or wood.

Loft Staircases

A stylish alternative to a traditional loft ladder. Loft staircases are a fashionable and modern way to provide access to a loft conversion or a mezzanine without taking up too much space. They’re usually a lot nicer to look at, and it’s a great option to consider if you have the space. This option is best suited to lofts that have been converted into rooms and require quick and easy access.

Sliding Loft Ladders

Extending loft ladders are a terrific alternative if you have minimal space to work with. They take up very little space due to their collapsible nature, plus they’re sturdy, safe and convenient. There are many timber and aluminium ladders available to match your home’s existing style, so you never have to worry about them sticking out like a sore thumb.

Concertina Loft Ladders

Concertina loft ladders provide great access for those awkward spaces in the house, especially where the hatch space or floor space is limited. Thanks to the ladder’s compact design, you will be able to make the most of your living space. These loft ladders are incredibly lightweight and easy to operate, so there’s no need to faff around.

Now, it’s all well and good to know about the different types of loft ladder, but there’s something else to consider: material. Wood and aluminium have their own advantages and disadvantages, so we’ve broken them down for you below.

Aluminium Loft Ladders

Aluminium will always give you a solid and sturdy means of accessing your loft. Aluminium is sturdy yet lightweight, and metal ladders tend to have a streamlined look that’s a good fit for modern homes.

Aluminium loft ladders offer a great deal of versatility. You can purchase them in the extendable or sliding type, or as a folding ladder. This works well with their reduced weight as you can ensure maximum ease of use no matter your level of body strength.

In comparison to wooden loft ladders, aluminium ladders are a lot louder and will make a bit of noise when pulled out or extended. Depending on the purpose of your loft ladder and its placement, this may be something to consider when choosing what type of loft ladder is best for you.

Whilst they may not be as bulky as timber loft ladders, the aluminium loft ladders do look more industrial in style.  This may not fit in with your home decor, but it is important to note that most loft ladders are usually hidden from view until they need to be used.

Wooden Loft Ladders

A wooden loft ladder is a sturdy option with a nice, traditional aesthetic. Timber loft ladders are good at taking heavy loads, although this does depend on the type of wood used.

Depending on the aesthetics of your home, a wooden loft ladder can add a homely, authentic yet traditional feel to your property.

Wood is a lot heavier than aluminium. In regards to safety, you should consider whether you will be able to handle the ladder safely without losing control of it.

A few safety tips to keep in mind when using your loft ladder:

  1. Maintain 3 points of contact with the ladder at all times – don’t try and show off by using no hands.
  2. Ask for help if you’re struggling – it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
  3. Wear sensible and sturdy footwear to avoid slipping or tripping.
  4. Check that the hatch and loft ladder are sturdy before climbing.
