Choose A Rug with Meaning (Guest Post)

Floral runner rugRugs have been around for centuries. There is nothing like a great rug to make your room feel complete. The options are endless in terms of colours, design, shape, fabric, placement.

Thinking of a regular home, there are door mats to make your hallway welcoming, there are bath mats that make your bathrooms safer, and there are large rugs that can serve as a focal point for a room, whether in front of the hearth or under the coffee table.

If you are looking for a rug with a story to tell, consider choosing an Oriental or Persian rug that uses imagery and symbolism – the images and patterns have a history that dates back years.

Symbols and Motifs

Symbols and motifs embedded into the design actually have different meanings to people across cultures. Oriental rugs tend to feature common symbols such as the cross, the star cross, and the gul. The word gul is a Persian word which means flower. A basic rosette flower is thought to be representative of a rose, which is, in turn, a symbol of life.

Green flower rugPersian rugs use trees, flowers, and animals. Persian rugs have Cypress trees to represent strength and endurance. The carnation flower used in a Persian rug is meant to represent happiness. A chicken or rooster represents a fresh start in life, and with other birds representing paradise.

Why not use the lessons learnt today when helping you choose a new rug for your home? That, or appear a wealth of knowledge when you’re inviting over friends.
